Root Canals

An infection in the canal of a tooth necessitates root canal therapy. The root canal procedure involves the dentist cleaning out the infected portion of the root canal then sealing it to ward off subsequent infections. If the infected root canal is not treated, the tooth will abscess and lead to all sorts of problems including bone loss, swelling and nasty drainage.

The solution is to schedule an appointment for a root canal at our office by dialing (951) 214-6585. Even if you suspect your child or baby has an infected tooth canal or other oral health issue, it is better to be safe rather than sorry by scheduling a root canal. Root canals are performed on both baby teeth and adult teeth. Pediatric root canals include pulpotomies in which the coronal section of the pulp is eliminated and pulpectomies in which the root canal and crown of the pulp chamber are removed.

Pulpectomy root canals are also performed on adults. This type of root canal involves the full elimination of pulp tissue within the tooth as the initial step of the root canal. The procedure removes the pulp that has been infection in the tooth’s crown and also its roots, preserving as much tooth as possible. If the tooth in question has abscessed, an apicoectomy will be performed in which the dentist removes a small amount of the root’s tip to eliminate the infected tissue and clean the space. The canal is then filled with Gutta Percha, a biocompatible material that seals the tooth, preventing bacteria from moving in and causing reinfection.
